Westmere School - Auckland

A project plan has been established by students of Westmere School for a 10-year restoration programme for the Francis Street Reserve, close to the school.  The aim is to reduce and maintain weeds at low amounts, while increasing native tree plantings.

In March 2010 a cheque for funding was presented at Westmere School's assembly.  Sessions were then held with Auckland City Council in March for the children to learn how to identified the native plants and noxious weeds in the area.  The children also checked the health of the water from the creek through taking water samples.

In June, children visited the site to start the weeding process.  This was follows by a community planting day on 22nd August.  Over 500 plants were established by the creek and the surrounding bank.

We look forward to further updates from Westmere School on the progress of their project.
