Okiwi School - Great Barrier Island

Okiwi School are working on a wetland restoration project situated adjacent to their school in the Okiwi Valley, Great Barrier island.  Students are already operating rat bait stations in the Okiwi Park near the school as well as planting trees that they have propagated.

The wetland restoration involves extending these efforts to the wetland reserve by setting up and maintaining rat bait stations and monitoring the effectiveness of these.  Students will also be propagating seeds and planting these back in the reserve to help improve habitat for the fauna populations.  This includes the pateke brown teal duck.

This project will help reduce devastation to the native flora and fauna species and encourage revegation of plants that will bring wildlife back to the area and is will be ongoing.

Kids restore New Zealand provided funding in 2009 to help students carry out further planting and pest control.
